The dehydration of sugar in sulfuric acid, science motherfuckers.
Mmmm, a nice steaming cup of-HOLY FUCK.
This is the best representation of ‘That escalated quickly.’
Incidentally this film is sped up really fast. I have done this reaction many times; the carbon tower takes several minutes to grow.
Chemically, what’s happening here is that the sulfuric acid is essentially pulling the water out of the sugar, which is a carbohydrate (a compound made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen), which leaves only pure carbon behind. What you’re seeing is a tower of pure carbon.
